U.S. OFFICE OF PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT RELEASES GUIDANCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COMPETENCIES

SPRINGFIELD, VA (​July 18, 2023​) — The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), in collaboration with the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released guidance to support agencies across the federal government in targeting key skills and competencies related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) positions.

“To help the Federal government recruit and train more AI talent…OPM is providing for immediate use...general and technical AI competencies,” OPM Director Kiran Ahuja wrote in the published memo.

Based on OPM’s guidance, agencies can “use the AI competencies to select, assess, and train AI talent as confirmed by a job analyses.”  

‍

This is the first guidance on AI directed by Public Law 116-260, The AI in Government Act of 2020 (the Act), and the first attempt that OPM is taking to support AI-related initiatives.

With the use of AI becoming more commonplace, the federal government will need more people with the skills to help agencies use it well.
