Navigating the federal job application process can be daunting, especially for first-timers. Planning is essential whether you’re a recent grad, a seasoned professional, or considering a career change. Here are three essential tips to help you get started:

Research and Identify Career Fields

Identify federal careers that match your knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) provides valuable resources, such as the MOSAIC Competencies Guide, which covers nearly 200 occupations.

For recent grads and career changers, USAJOBS® offers a helpful list of federal occupations by college major. To understand different roles and requirements, explore OPM’s Position Classification Standards and O*NET Online’s list of federal jobs. The Partnership for Public Service’s Go Government site is another excellent resource for understanding the federal hiring process.

Match Your Skills

Once you’ve identified potential careers (limit to three for focus), match your transferable skills to these roles. Review job announcements on USAJOBS® to understand the qualifications and KSAs required. Tailor your résumé and cover letter to highlight these critical skills and experiences. This step ensures your application stands out to hiring officials.

Apply Strategically

USAJOBS® is the primary platform for federal job listings, but don’t rely on it alone. Use a comprehensive job search strategy, including:

- Networking

- Contacting HR offices

- Researching agency websites

Your success in landing a federal job depends on your proactive efforts. Turn over every stone and apply with determination.

Planning, researching career fields, matching your skills, and applying strategically increase your chances of securing a federal job. Happy job hunting!
